I’ve been meaning to add a Drone section to the portfolio page for a long time now, and today I finally did it.
I bought my first drone in 2017, and have now owned three different ones, each better than the last. The biggest change in my almost 35 years of professional photography and video was going from film to digital photography– a change I made in 2002 when I bought Canon’s top of the line 1D camera- a whopping $5,000 purchase. But after that, drones have made the next biggest impact on my work. I can’t overstress the extra vision it adds to my photography and video capabilities.
In my career, I’ve chartered several small planes to do aerial photography; it was always a pain to call a charter company, negotiate the costs, book a pilot and then hope the weather cooperates on the day you reserved your flight. Having said all that, I loved every flight- they were all exhilarating and super fun- specially when you got to open the window and shoot looking straight down as the plane banked above your subject.
But now, I can fly whenever I want. If the weather’s bad, I’ll just put off the flight until it’s just right. And unlike flying in a small Cessna, I don’t have to wait until the plane circles to fly over my chosen vantage point; I can fly to wherever I want and hover there, making as many images as I like. And video- wow, I can now shoot 4K video of my aerial flights, resulting in ultra high definition images.
